Representative blend: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot. Annual production: 16,000 cases of Grand Vin and 8,000 cases of Forts de Latour. The third wine is simply called Pauillac de Latour.

At the very southern end of Pauillac stands the unmistakable medieval tower of Latour, which marks the heart of the vineyards, sloping gently down to the Gironde river beyond. This proximity to the river both wards off spring frosts and cools the vineyards during particularly warm summers. The result is that Latour produces extremely consistent wines, however tricky the vintage. Above all, this is a wine of power: enormous tannic structure and great density of fruit make this one of the most long lived of all Bordeaux (rivalled only perhaps by its neighbour Léoville Las Cases).

In recent times Latour has made waves by withdrawing from the annual Futures campaign; its wines are now only offered when the estate considers them ready for drinking.

Latour is owned by French businessman Francois Pinault.

Tasting Note

Nicholas Jackson: In 2017, very multi-dimensional nose - all sorts of fruit and spice. Deep, succulent black fruits, cigar smoke and leather. Beautifully ripe tannins add to the impression of smoothness. Approaching full bloom, but not quite there! Astounding Bordeaux.

Serena Sutcliffe, MW: Huge plums and roses nose. So silky-textured but with great flesh and body. Irony and tannic in the Latour way but with wonderful red fruits and freshness to balance. 01/09
