In Hong Kong, the season of drinking whites extends well into autumn with the scorching summer heat continuing to dominate the city. Below I have listed what I have been drinking and enjoying over the last few months and highly recommend.
Aligote
There is no better time to drink Aligote than after a hot and humid day. Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, makes a unique Aligote from Bouzeron where the grape has gained its reputation. I love this wine’s liveliness, juiciness and its perfect pairing to Hong Kong’s abundant fresh seafood.

Chardonnay
One can easily be lured to the great Chardonnays crafted in Burgundy, and I recommend Hubert Lamy’s Saint Aubin La Princée villages blend. It is vibrant and intense, offering excellent value for everyday drinking and from one of the most exciting names in Burgundy today. For those who favor more fat and more texture, without losing the backbone acidity, Ridge’s Estate Chardonnay is a great option. It is incredibly approachable at such an early stage, showing layers of flavors on the palate and a persistent finish.

Sauvignon Blanc
Founded in 1945, Domaine Gitton makes some of the most distinctive Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Les Romains is made from vines planted in the 70's with grapes then fermented and aged for about ten months in large 600 litre oak casks. I love this beautiful and rich Sauvignon Blanc that offers much more flesh of fruit than your usual Sauvignon Blanc. Another expression of this grape, crafted by the Guinaudeau Family, the owners of Lafleur, is the sophisticated and characterful Champs Libres 2014, with charming tropical fruit and citrus notes. The ageing in oak provides a nice texture on the palate that lends itself to seafood and white meat. I suggest drinking these two bottles side by side to taste the versatility of this grape.
