White Bordeaux 2016 - An Excellent Vintage

Lucien Michel | October 22, 2020

Freshness & Body

During our latest wine auctions, mature white Bordeaux has attracted a lot of interest. That is a testament to how good these white wines can be and to their aging potential. They also offer so much value for money.

The 2016 vintage is truly excellent: as the wines mature the Semillon adds body, while there is an appealing freshness brought by Sauvignon Blanc. This is a vintage that gives delightful drinking in the early years and even greater pleasure as the wines ages.

We are pleased to offer in this vintage:

• Aile d’Argent 2016 – the limited release white wine produced by Mouton Rothschild is generous and exotic, with delicious fatness brought by the malolactic fermentation. It is delicious right now, but it is so finely balanced that it will also age much longer. Blend: 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 46% Sémillon, and 2% Muscadelle

• Champs Libres 2016 – Made by the family behind the famed Château Lafleur, this is a complex and intense wine with a fresh mineral backbone. The fine balance is impressive and shows this wine will age beautifully. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

• Hauts de Smith Blanc 2016 – A fleshy and fruity wine that drinks so well today and represents such value. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

• Petit Cheval Blanc 2016 – The ultra-rare white wine of famed Château Cheval Blanc, with the first vintage in 2014. This Saint-Émilion estate delivers a unique white wine of pure class. Focused, delicate, with longer aging on lees (20 months), this is fresh, fine, and balanced. It will age gracefully but is also very enjoyable today. 100% Sauvignon Blanc

With fresher days and the cooler season making a debut in Hong Kong, I enjoy drinking white wines with more body and Bordeaux is so good for that. We also tend to forget how well these wines can age! Cellar for 10+ years and see for yourself how satisfying mature Bordeaux can be!
