Lucien Michel | September 17, 2020

A Collector’s Offer – Only 509 Cases Released

The famed Ornellaia estate, in Bolgheri, has a global following and is widely considered one of the very finest producers of Super Tuscans. The reason for Ornellaia’s continued success is its consistency, achieved with the combined talents of winemaker Axel Heinz and consultant Michel Rolland who craft a Grand Vin with signature flamboyance, impressive power and terroir-transparency. The wine is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, along with a touch of Petit Verdot, depending on the vintage.

We are pleased to offer a rare edition of Ornellaia’s Grand Vin containing three consecutive and impressive vintages. This special wooden case contains two bottles each of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. Each case is numbered and only 509 were released for the world, just four of them are available at Sotheby’s Wine. Now is your chance to order one for yourself to lay down or to drink.

• 2006: A profound expression of the terroir, this is packed with rich, ripe fruits. A very complex wine with layers of flavors, like black cherries, graphite, tar, sweet herbs and spice. From a rich vintage, this is a very powerful wine that is also very finely balanced and still has decades of life ahead.

• 2007: A more open and clean wine, the 2007 is a strikingly elegant, highly perfumed Ornellaia with an interesting touch of minerality. A fantastic effort: complex, classy, velvety in texture and what an amazing finish!

• 2008: An explosive nose of dark cherries, chocolate and mocha. On the palate the rich textured aromas are more on the licorice side and develop to become more complex as the wine unfurls. 2008 was a blockbuster year, and this truly shows that Ornellaia produced a monumental wine with amazing richness and power. A structured wine that is just starting to fully reveal itself.
