Domaine J.F. Mugnier

The Quintessence of Chambolle-Musigny

For me, the wines from Domaine J.F. Mugnier are some of the purest and most fragrant in all of Burgundy and the quintessence of Chambolle-Musigny. With a history going back to 1863, the holdings have changed over the years but they now encompass some of the very finest vineyards in the village, including Grand Cru Musigny, Bonnes Mares and also the much lauded 1er cru Les Amoureuses.

In 2004, the current generation owner, Frédéric Mugnier, took back the 1er cru monopole vineyard Nuits St Georges, Clos de la Maréchale, which was on lease to Faiveley since 1950. This almost doubled the Domaine’s production and is the only vineyard holding not to come from Chambolle-Musigny. I have enjoyed various vintages of Clos de la Maréchale over the past year, and I have never been disappointed. Incredibly consistent and combining the spice and raw power of NSG with the deftness of touch and elegance you expect from this Domaine. It is also an excellent value!

Below I have selected a cross section of the vineyards and recent vintages:

Clos de la Maréchale Blanc is made from grapes located on the northwestern part of the Clos. In the early 2000’s, Frederic Mugnier discovered a bottle of 1943 Clos de la Maréchale Blanc in his cellar. He found that there was great potential for white in his vineyard and instead of starting a new vineyard he decided to graft some Chardonnay on his current Pinot Noir vine to keep the roots. The Clos de la Maréchale Blanc is produced in small quantities on only 0.6ha. The wine shows a large variety of aromas from pear to exotic fruits with nice mineral notes.

Clos de la Maréchale Rouge covers 9.55ha originally planted in the early 1910’s and was leased to Faiveley from 1950 up to 2004. An interesting fact is that if you look at the label you will see the “a” of “La” is backwards as a worker installed it incorrectly on the archway of the Clos! Clos de la Maréchale Rouge needs a few years of bottle aging to open up and shows floral character with raspberry notes, iris and white lilac. This is a very good value from the Domaine.

Chambolle Musigny “Les Amoureuses”, is one of the most sought after wines in Burgundy. Mugnier’s Amoureuses offers an exceptional richness, with incredible depth of fruit but at the same time incredible delicacy. This is among the very finest 1er Cru from Chambolle and should really stand alongside with the very finest Grand Cru.

Musigny from the Domaine covers 1.13ha, which is the second largest holding. The Musigny Mugnier is considered by many Burgundy lovers as the reference point wine from the village. In 2015 Frederic Mugnier decided he will hold back the release of Musigny and only release on the market after a few years of aging in his cellar as he felt that people were drinking it too early and not enjoying as it should be.
