Variety of Styles from Leading Estates
We continue our focus on the 2017 Bordeaux vintage, heading south from St-Estèphe, to the iconic region of Pauillac, which is home to some of the finest and most long-lived Bordeaux; thanks to their impressive concentration and structure. This terroir, which comes from ancient river bed gravel, is ideally situated next to the Gironde river, which acts as a cooling element in hot years but also retains warmth during the cold winters. In 2017, this micro-climate helped the Pauillac vines escape frosts that hit the Bordeaux region. We have a selection of the very finest properties, at various price points, to add to your cellar.
Château Lynch-Bages is a seductive wine with great purity behind the classical “Lynch” structure. Packed with ripe dark, blue fruits and mint, with a saline finish, this is tightly knit but highly promising.
The Pichon Lalande is more coiled at this stage. It is a muscular example of this great property. Behind the power is an incredibly fine balance, with notes of plum, blackberries, cassis, cedar, and tobacco. It is supple, with impeccable weight and delicious length. This is my personal pick - Nicolas Glumineau is leading this estate in a great direction, constantly producing wines with breed, class, and power, that have a racy edge, bringing out the best of this terroir.
In 2017, Pontet-Canet made a wine that is highly perfumed, with a complex nose of dark fruits with licorice and rose petals. Very finely put together, the palate is gracious and impressive in length. This is another great success for the pioneering team led by Alfred Tesseron.
Château Lafite’s second wine, Carruades de Lafite, is highly seductive this vintage. This is silky and balanced with a beautiful open nose. The tannins are like cashmere and this is already approachable and delicious.
Some of these are very limited – be prompt if you wish to secure some.
