The village of Meursault is crowded with wonderful winemakers. Roulot, Lafon, Bernand-Bonin, Arnaud Ente: all call Meursault home. But ask Burgundy lovers which Meursault producer they would most like to spend an evening with, and their answer will inevitably be Coche-Dury. This magical domaine, now helmed by Raphaël Coche-Dury, has for at least two generations produced scintillating wines of great energy, precision and concentration; a kind of recipe of greatness, imitated but rarely matched.
The humble Bourgogne Blanc is a bottling that easily exceeds its classification, while the Meursault is the best introduction to the domaine's style. The wines are so meticulously made that they are among Burgundy's most long-lived whites, and in fact benefit from a few years aging to display their true glories. 7-10 years after the vintage is a good starting point for the village wines. Unlike the regular village wine, the Rougeots is sourced from the same plot every year, and displays additional vitality and mineral zest. Beg, borrow or steal if you haven't tried Coche-Dury before. These are essential white Burgundy wines.
