When wine lovers think of the Super Tuscans, they usually think of the Tuscan coast. And indeed that is where many are located. But one of the greats is a long way from there, and much closer to Tuscany’s wine heartland. In the beautiful Val d’Orcia, Tenuta di Trinoro produces some of Tuscany’s great Bordeaux blends; wines of immense ripeness, concentration, and hedonistic pleasure.
Trinoro’s differentiating feature is its reliance on Cabernet Franc. This wonderful variety gives a notable fragrance and finesse to the wines. It plays a big role in the estate wine (Tenuta di Trinoro), and really shines in the three different single-vineyard Cabernet Franc wines. Magnacosta, from a lower elevation, is supple and generous; Tenaglia, spicy and rich; Camagi, powerful and structured. Finally, Palazzi is the 100% Merlot homage to Pomerol.
