René Rostaing: A Côte-Rôtie Classic

Lucien Michel | May 10, 2022

The wines of René Rostaing have a special place in the heart of all Côte-Rôtie fans. Today it is managed by his son, Pierre, and while his approach remains open to technical developments, he firmly believes the traditionalist approach allows his wines to express the terroir with more finesse.

As the tradition commands, the wines undergo a whole-bunch fermentation and mature in demi-muids and Burgundy barrels (around 30% new-oak depending on the vintage).

The estate spreads over 8 hectares and is organically farmed almost in its entirety. Mainly planted with Syrah and a little Viognier, it is worth noting that part of the holding was inherited from the famous Gentaz-Dervieux vineyard.

The fantastic 2019 vintage offered opulent and rich Côte-Rôtie wines.

Ampodium is the flagship wine; it is an assemblage of plots throughout Côte-Rôtie. It represents a great expression of the appellation where fruit meets spice and complexity.

Côte Blonde, as a single-vineyard, is elegant and expressive; it offers a more delicate side of Côte-Rôtie.

La Landonne, the other single vineyard from this selection, is powerful, rich and dense; only time will reveal its full spectrum.

Côtes du Rhône is being celebrated in Hong Kong this year, thanks to French GourMay:
