Online Exclusive: Orin Swift

Finna Sze | September 4, 2024

Today, I am pleased to introduce a selection of Orin Swift, from California to you.

Founded in 1998, Dave Phinney combined his father’s middle name and his mother’s maiden name to create the title of Orin Swift. Dave’s winemaking journey began in 1996, and after a stint as a harvest worker at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997, he established Orin Swift. Named Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in 2019, his wines are highly regarded by critics like Robert Parker for their considerable character and complexity.

Having sampled many of his wines, I am truly impressed by the quality offered at their price points.

Aged for 9 months in French oak, the Mannequin Chardonnay delivers enticing aromas of peach, citrus, toast, and crème fraîche. On the palate, it's full-bodied with a smooth, rounded finish, and a hint of toffee that lingers pleasantly.

The 8 Years in the Desert is a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah, aged for 7 months in French oak. This wine opens with aromas of wild blackberry, pepper, dark chocolate, and spices. On the palate, you’ll find brambles, raspberry, black cherry, and a touch of cacao. If you enjoy full-bodied, fruit-forward wines, this one is sure to please.

The Papillon, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, is another standout. Aged for 16 months in French oak, it offers rich notes of currants, blackberries, and blue fruits, along with hints of lavender. This wine is both fruity and structured, with structured heft through the mid-palate.

One of the most captivating aspects of Orin Swift wines is their labels. Each one is a unique piece of art, combining storytelling and creativity – truly bringing Dave Phinney's vision to life.
