Online Exclusive: Domaine du Comte Liger Belair

Retail Team | March 12, 2024

Count Louis-Michel Liger-Belair has spent the past 20 years piecing back together a once-grand family estate and breathing new life into a hallowed corner of Vosne-Romanée.

The results speak for themselves. Decanter has called Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair’s wines “universally recognized as among the best in Burgundy.” He produces 15 cuvées, culled from illustrious parcels like the famed La Romanée and Clos du Château monopoles.

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair was founded by Liger-Belair in 2000, but the origins of his family’s holdings here date back to 1815, when his ancestor, a general in the Napoleonic era, purchased Château de Vosne-Romanée. Over the years, the estate came to include several of the region’s best vineyards, including La Tâche and La Grand Rue.

In 1933, succession troubles led the family to sell off all but a few vineyards. La Tâche went to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located just around the corner. From the age of eight, Liger-Belair vowed that he would one day run the estate as a winemaker, and today his dream is fully alive. He is the first in his family to personally work the vineyards, instituting new practices like horse ploughing and biodynamic farming. He has also gradually reacquired parcels that were previously sold off, building back this powerhouse property to new levels of renown.

In this limited-time online exclusive, Sotheby’s Wine is pleased to share a small selection of cuvées from Liger-Belair’s coveted collection, including two vintages of the extremely rare cuvée: La Romanée and several outstanding Premier Crus. Fresh, sensually rich, and plush, these are thrilling benchmark Burgundies from one of Vosne-Romanée's most exciting properties.
