There are few secrets left in Gevrey-Chambertin. Located near the heart of this esteemed appellation, Domaine Pierre Damoy crafts exquisite wines, including the formidable Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru. These offerings, not yet universally acclaimed, represent some of the most astute acquisitions in red Burgundy.
Following a golden era in the 1950s and 1960s, quality at the domaine had waned until fifth-generation family winemaker Pierre Damoy took over and revitalized operations with a philosophy of “durable viticulture”. Thanks to his welcoming approach to sustainable farming critics have hailed his sensitive, silky wines as the best to be released from the domaine in well over 30 years.
Of the winery’s 10.6 hectares of holdings, eight are classified as Grand Cru, including significant chunks of Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Chapelle Chambertin. With the majority of his vineyards planted in the 1920s, Pierre considers a 50-year-old Pinot vine to be young! Undoctrinaire in attitude, he tends to pick late, but does not follow any strict rule, and is similarly flexible when it comes to whole clusters in fermentation, usually employing around 30% to 40%.
Under Pierre’s direction, the wines have become more lithe and elegant and at the same time more energetic and bright. 2019, which combines freshness and concentration, surfaced all the virtues of his style, making each of the wines below a star in its category. Add these stellar Gevrey-Chambertin wines to your collection while they can still be considered something of a hidden value.
