Napa Elegance: The Top Examples

Napa’s Cabernet wines are often celebrated for their bold flavours, rich fruit and powerful concentration. But there is another side of the Valley too; one which makes this variety with a more gentle approach, a touch more acidity and less dense fruit. These can be among Napa’s most exciting expressions, a combination of concentration and finesse that only the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines achieve.

Eisele Vineyard makes a serious claim to being Napa’s greatest single site. Now in the hands of Artemis Domaines (Château Latour), the vineyard was for a long time the property of the Araujo family. Their 2011 is showing beautifully today, the cool vintage and understated winemaking combining in glorious fashion. Staying in Calistoga, Larkmead is a top exponent of the finesse-first style, and the 2014 is at its peak now.

From the eastern slopes of the valley, Continuum is a relatively new property that harnesses the native power of the terroir with cool sophistication. And back on the valley floor, Christian Moueix’s second wine, Napanook, from his famous Dominus estate, is an easy introduction to this refined style of Napa Cabernet.
