La Fleur-Pétrus: Glorious Pomerol

Nick Jackson, MW | May 31, 2025

Located on the plateau of Pomerol, and, as the name suggests, near two very famous neighbours, Petrus and Lafleur, La Fleur-Pétrus produces sumptuous Pomerol from its magnificent terroir. Owned by Right Bank power brokers the Moueix family since the 1950s, La Fleur-Pétrus still, perhaps, flies a little under the radar given the quality of the wines.

The soils of La Fleur-Pétrus are typical of the Pomerol plateau: largely clay, with some gravel. The blend is almost entirely Merlot, with just a touch of Cabernet Franc. These ingredients make the style inevitable: rich, velvety and with a long, truffly finish. What more could any lover of the Right Bank want?

We have three recent vintages available, all of a very different profile. The youngest, 2018, is the result of a hot summer, and displays rich, heady fruit and layers of velvety texture. The 2017 is lighter and fresher, with lovely aromatics and offering an attractive drinkability already. The 2016, meanwhile, may be the pick of the bunch. The product of a balanced growing season, it combines generosity of fruit with a fresh structure that will ensure a long life.
