Jewels from Launay-Horiot

Nick Jackson, MW | April 23, 2025

Launay-Horiot may not yet be a name familiar to Burgundy lovers, given the small size of the domaine (four hectares) and its recent establishment (2014). A complex and lengthy family saga eventually left former fighter pilot Xavier Horiot with this property, very unusually composed of two distinct sides: village and Premiers Crus from Pommard, and Grands Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin.

There are no humble wines here. The largest holding is village-level Pommard Perrières, of which a part was planted way back in 1902. The Pommard Premiers Crus display the style of the domaine: wonderfully pure, succulent wines that belie Pommard's stolid reputation. The Chambertin Grands Crus show Xavier's full skill as a winemaker, producing wines of a beauty and complexity that rival some of Burgundy's top names.
