Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier remains the magician of Chambolle-Musigny, capable of elevating the wines of this celebrated village to new levels. Mugnier's style is one of lightness of touch, purity of fruit and transparency to terroir. Even the grandest wines are rarely more than mid-weight; their ravishing aromatics and sensuous fruit textures the beauty of these wines.
The best place to start is the Clos de la Maréchale, a walled monopole on the main road south of Nuits St. Georges. This occasionally pedestrian stretch of Burgundy acquires a new grace and charm under Mugnier and offers comparatively good value. The village level Chambolle is rarely less than thrilling, while the Fuées (a hidden joy) and especially the brilliant Amoureuses are among the village's highest expressions.
The Musigny itself takes a few years of bottle age to unfold, but when it does, the glossy fruit, silky texture and endless mineral depths underpin one of Burgundy's greatest reds.
