Domaine de Montille is one of the larger estates of the Côte de Beaune, built up over the decades by Hubert and son Etienne, from 2.5 hectares in 1947, to 35 hectares today. Most of us consider de Montille synonymous with Volnay, but in fact these acquisitions broadened the portfolio to cover many of the other villages in the Côte de Beaune, and extended into the Côte de Nuits too, in both colours. Winemaking emphasises purity and terroir expression. In red, there is a considerable use of whole cluster fruit; in white, early picking and limited batonnage encourage a fine-boned, precise style.
Today, we focus on de Montille's non-Volnay selections. From the Côte de Nuits, Nuits Juliens (village wine) and Thorey Premier Cru are located on the Vosne side of town. Both combine Nuits' typical concentration of fruit with a floral, alluring nose. In Vosne itself is de Montille's most celebrated holding, the Cuvée Christiane from the brilliant Malconsorts Premier Cru. de Montille makes a 'regular' Malconsorts, but this is a separate, 0.5 ha segment of the vineyard effectively 'within' La Tâche and sharing many of that site's hedonistic qualities. We are pleased to offer the 2007; a stunning wine to enjoy today.
Further north, Clos de Vougeot is a classic of the genre: juicy, gamey and structured. Heading back south towards the domaine, in white, the Puligny Chalumeaux is in Blagny, high up on the slope, offering a chiselled, mineral style. A range of terroirs, then, yet all made with de Montille's trademark attention to detail and finesse.
