Domaine Jean-Louis Chave: Northern Rhône Elegance

Retail Team | November 21, 2023

The Chave name is virtually synonymous with Hermitage, and the domaine’s Syrah bottlings off the steep, granitic hill consistently produce brilliant expressions, typified by impeccable breeding, power, and purity.

The lineage of today’s 16th generation owner Jean-Louis Chave can be traced back to the winery’s founding in 1481 – a centuries-long continuity between one family and a plot of land that is rare even for France.

The work in the vineyards is fastidious, but it’s in the winery where Chave’s reputation has really been minted. They’ve never released a single-vineyard Hermitage: every bottling is a blend of several lieux-dit such as Peleat, Les Beaume, and Les Bessards. There is no formula for the proportions, no designated time for oak aging – each vintage is encountered anew, as it were, the subject of intense scrutiny and conversation.

Sotheby’s Wine is pleased to offer three outstanding Chave Hermitage releases from the first two decades of the 21st century, showcasing Jean-Louis’s signature elegance. The 2008 is elegant and fresh, bolstered by concentration born of ruthless yield-cutting, as Chave declassified one-third of its production.

The 2012 is supple and beautifully well-integrated, resolving into a rich blend of spice-laced black fruit and graphite detail. The 2013 is medium to full-bodied with seamless length, yielding precise cassis and minerality.

In concert, these bottlings reveal not only the amazing tertiary complexity that Chave’s wines achieve with time, but a linked legacy of family and terroir that is the bedrock of this timeless Rhône estate.
