The 2008 Vintage
The 2008 vintage was challenging for winegrowers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Indeed it was very damp and rainy through most of the growing season and through September as the harvest approached. Timing and selection of fruit was critical in order to select fully-ripe grapes, and, as is often the case, Clos des Papes nailed it!
Drinking very well today, this 2008 is packed with perfumed red berries, dried flowers and spices. It has something Burgundian about it – showing more elegance than power. However, it does not lack density, and it carries a silky mouthfeel and a spicy finish. I strongly recommend it.
Clos des Papes’s Châteauneufs still offer so much value today! With a majority of Grenache, then Mourvedre and Syrah, along with a small percentage of the other permitted varieties, this consistent estate continues to impress me with their refined and modern wines. Give this one a try and see for yourself!
