The Flamboyant Pauillac
Mouton 2017 had one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon ever, at 90%, with 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Mouton always impresses me with its power and opulence. The 2017 is a hedonistic wine with cassis, cedar, tea leaf and tobacco, but is still so refined. The tannins in 2017 reached great ripeness, and the wine also offers a very deep color, with great structure, however the texture is very suave and silky. The mouthfeel has the signature flamboyance of Mouton that I love. For me the 2017 vintage is profound and I feel it is going to be one of the most long-lived Moutons ever!
In the modern era, Mouton has achieved an enviable track record for consistency at the highest quality levels and, in particular, overachieving in so-called “lesser years” - the Mouton style shines through.
Below we offer a selection of vintages, spanning decades. Ranging from the monumental 1995 and 2010, to my personal favorites in the 2007 and 2012.
