Ao Yun: Your First Step into Chinese Wine Excellence

Finna Sze | July 8, 2023

Chinese wine has taken the world by storm, capturing the attention of wine enthusiasts everywhere. Among the impressive selection of Chinese wines available, there is one that stands out as an exceptional starting point for your journey into the world of Chinese wine: Ao Yun.

After an extensive four-year search across China, the ideal terroir for crafting a red wine worthy of comparison with the world’s greatest was discovered in the northern region of the Yunnan province. Nestled at the foot of the sacred Meili mountain, in the villages of Adong, Xidang, Sinong, and Shuori, lie the Ao Yun vineyards, ranging in altitude from 2,200 to 2,600 meters. This setting allows the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to embody the full refinement of this unique terroir.

The inaugural vintage of Ao Yun, produced in 2013, is an exquisite blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine delights the senses with notes of blond tobacco, tea leaves, red currants, and raspberries on the nose. The palate offers a round and refreshing experience, with juicy flavors and a perfect balance.

Building upon the success of the 2013 vintage, the 2014 release maintains the same blend but offers more cedar wood, cinnamon, leather, and black cherries on the nose. The palate boasts a heightened structure and intensity, elevating the overall tasting experience.

The 2015 vintage encountered a warm start, characterized by a slightly dry winter, followed by an unusually warm and dry spring. Comprising 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Cabernet Franc, this wine exudes elegance, freshness, and a captivating complexity. On the nose, you can expect aromas of cold chimenea, freshly crushed ripe strawberries, and plum.
