Robert Mondavi’s Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is widely known to wine lovers as a Napa Valley icon, appreciated for its consistently excellent quality, since its inaugural 1971 vintage . The Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve used to be crafted from a selection of Mondavi’s best vineyard blocks, including the famous To Kalon. Since the 2011 release, this wine has actually been renamed as Reserve To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, as the grapes are now all from To Kalon.
I am a huge fan of this wine, not only for its high quality, but also for its incredible value. It is one of the wines that showed me exactly how good Napa Cabernet can be, especially when fully mature. In the past five decades, Mondavi’s Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve continuously demonstrates vintage characteristics, whilst expressing the personalities of the grapes and region each year.
Over the last few months, we have collected a selection of mature vintages to offer.
1992: showy with expressive ripe fruits and a rich texture.
1994: sensational and elegant with charming floral scents and abundant black fruits.
1998: toasty, smoky characters and a tannic structure.
1999: a more restrained style with subtle minerality and bright black fruits. Even better, the 1999 comes in magnum.
2000: the first vintage aged in large Taransaud oak fermenters. I recently had this bottle and it is drinking unbelievably well with great concentration and long finish.
