A Legend in the Making: Opus One 2021

Nick Jackson, MW | June 28, 2025

After the fire-plagued vintage of 2020, 2021 brought a welcome calm to Napa Valley. The season was largely harmonious, if very dry. This shrunk the size of the berries and created finished wines of considerable concentration and intensity of flavour.

With its enviable spread of vineyards on the valley floor, Opus One was well-placed to make the most of the conditions, and the 2021 vintage is rightly being compared with modern classics such as 2013. The Opus style is always a touch more restrained than many neighboring properties; it majors on generous, dark fruit, cashmere tannins and an aromatic finish. The 2021 combines these to glorious effect.

While the main wine will improve for at least another decade, the second wine, Overture, is a charming and accessible introduction to the property and is already yielding great pleasure.

Sotheby’s is also excited to announce a limited-time offer on all in-stock California wines. Valid now through the end of July, use code California2025 to receive 10% off at checkout.

This offer is valid until July 31, 2025, or while stocks last. Offer cannot be combined with any other offers and excludes previous purchases. Taxes and fees will be charged where applicable. Offer may change without notice. Other conditions may apply.
