More About Wine Futures

Buying Futures—also known as En Primeur—means purchasing wine that is still maturing in the barrel. This is wine that has not yet been bottled. To purchase wine at the first release price, when the margins made by wine merchants are smallest. In most vintages, although not always the case, the price of the wine increases and the margins made by wine merchants also increase once the wine is offered for sale in bottle.

Tasting Note

Serena Sutcliffe, MW: Cabernet Sauvignon 96%, Merlot 3.5%, Petit Verdot 0.5%. That real 1er cru scent, always haunting at Lafite, with nice overtones of wild herbs, as in the ‘maquis’. Lots of plummy fruit, together with fresh acidity, on the palate. The tannins are fine spiced plums, with a glühwein finish. Very integrated texture, with roses at the end.
Nicholas Jackson: Deliciously vibrant and fruity in a light, elegant style. Particularly silky – in fact, I would argue that the texture is the focal point of the wine. Some glycerol and such gorgeous red fruits on the finish. Very seductive. Only Lafite could make a wine of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon as elegant and playful as this!
