White Wine Reigns in Sun or Snow

White Wine to Pair With Winter Fare

By Sara Sparks | January 25, 2019

If your mind associates white wine to chilly glass by the pool, consider a less weather-dependent way to enjoy white in mid-winter: food pairing. Warm up with hearty chicken soup and a glass of white Burgundy, like the thyme-nosed Pouilly Vinzelles from Desjourneys or a golden-hued Primer Cru from Puligny-Montrachet. Off-dry Riesling can make even heavy fare pop. Check for Kabinett or Spatlese labeled German wines to go with apple-studded Pheasant Normande. Dry, aka Trocken, Riesling is flexible enough to pair with earthy, mushroom filled stews and bright, lemon-lime coated dishes.Try a tropical white Bordeaux to match citrusy fluke crudo. Semi-hard cheeses, especially cheddar, is another sharp pairing for dry white Bordeaux.

Whether you’re near snow-covered sidewalks or sandy beaches in January, white wine can hold a meaningful place in your life during the off-season.
