Glorious 1996 Bordeaux: Mouton Rothschild, Lafite and More
Nick Jackson, MW Consultant | November 15, 2022
1996 is one of the best Bordeaux vintages to drink today, especially for wines from the Left Bank. 1996 was a great year for Cabernet Sauvignon, and the resulting wines are now in full bloom, expressing all the tobacco and gravel aromas Bordeaux lovers so enjoy. The tannins are soft and the wines velvety: pure pleasure.
Château Margaux is probably the wine of the vintage. This really is a vintage for the ages, a resplendent wine of gorgeous aromas and texture. Mouton, Lafite and Haut-Brion are close behind, naturally; and three ‘super second’ stalwarts, Léoville-Las-Cases, Pichon Lalande and Cos d’Estournel are also glorious. You can’t really go wrong with Left Bank ‘96s: explore and enjoy.
