Beaune’s Best: Clos des Mouches

Elegant and Complex
The town of Beaune may ironically be more celebrated as the commercial capital of Burgundy’s wine region rather than for its own wines. But in the context of one great negociant - Joseph Drouhin - this assessment is mistaken. Because the domaine’s red and white wines from Beaune’s Clos des Mouches premier cru site show just how good the town’s wines can be.

The Clos des Mouches vineyard, of which the Drouhin family own about half, has long been considered among Beaune’s best. In Drouhin’s hands, the native suppleness and elegance of its wines emerge in full bloom. The white is without doubt Beaune’s greatest: fine boned, with a dry, mineral heart. The red has all the Cote de Beaune airy aromatics as well as an intricate, complex fruit profile. All these virtues emerge effortlessly in 2017: a gorgeous, approachable vintage to try today.
