2015 AR. PE. PE. Rosso di Valtellina Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is most famously grown in Piedmont, along the gently rolling hills of Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo from the neighboring region of Valtellina, however, is planted alongside the impossibly steep, granite cliffs of the Swiss Alps. Reminiscent of Germany’s Mosel, Nebbiolo from Valtellina is tough to grow and dangerous to harvest. The production is unsurprisingly small on these drama
tic slopes, which sit 2,000 ft above sea level, and the resulting wines are powerful with plenty of concentration.

Isabella Perego, who crafts the wines at AR. PE. PE., somehow brings out the delicacy and vibrancy of her mountain-grown Nebbiolo. With notes of rose petal, bing cherry and ripe strawberry this elegant Rosso di Valtellina is drinking superbly now with enough firm tannin and juicy acidity to age for another 2-5 years.
