A Stunning Array of 2005 Bordeaux

Nick Jackson, MW Consultant | October 4, 2021

A Towering Vintage

2005 remains a towering vintage for Bordeaux; a beacon of greatness across the landscape of the past few decades. Few years offer comparable homogeneity of quality across both Left and Right Banks, and at all quality levels; few offer the structure, richness of fruit and sheer intensity of these wines.

The 2005s have always been slow developers, and as they pass the 15 year mark, are just now beginning to open attractively. At the more affordable end, wines like Armailhac and Brane Cantenac are a delight today, while grander wines will continue to improve for another five years. Among this latter category, note particularly Lynch Bages, a brilliant triumph; Montrose, one of the best up to that point for the chateau; Cos d’Estournel; and showing all the glory of the year on the Right Bank, Evangile and Canon. The list below is a treasure trove; enjoy.
