A Deep Dive into the 1999 Vintage

Nick Jackson, MW Consultant | September 10, 2022

Was 1999 a significant year for you? If so, you may be familiar with the best wines from around the world in this vintage. If not, we’ve done the hard work for you, and compiled an impressive range of options from various regions. 23 years later, these wines are in the full bloom of maturity and should be drunk now and over the next five years.

In Champagne, Dom Perignon and Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 1999 are hard to find today, and drinking beautifully. The Cristal Rosé Vinotheque is a rare and astonishing wine, and a must-try for Champagne lovers.

Bordeaux 1999s have generally been overlooked in favour of the 2000s, but 1999 is a reassuringly classic year. Try Lynch-Bages on the Left Bank or Roc de Cambes on the Right Bank to see for yourself. For special occasions, Margaux, Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion and Cheval Blanc will not disappoint. Finally, from the brilliant Burgundy 1999 vintage, Leroy’s Romanée-St-Vivant is as compelling a bottle of wine as any of us are likely ever to taste.
