The most rewarding vintages are not always mutually inclusive with the perfect harvest. On the contrary, it’s the more challenging vintages that can often showcase the finer nuances of a certain varietal or the skillset of a particular vigneron.

2014 Barolo exemplifies this ideal, to a tee, thanks to the rather hail-stricken, cool conditions. It is a vintage with a distinct personality: not always the most dense, but more often than not, a vintage where the Nebbiolo grape showcased it’s more supple, subtle, and introspective character.

And the best producers, especially, delivered wines of surprising depth and complexity. Below we highlight the best of the surprising, not-to-be-overlooked 2014 vintage in Barolo.
